AGE DISCLAIMER: Unfortunately, most of the orphaned animals who come to the shelter looking for homes don't bring birth certificates. Sometimes we know our pets' ages. Sometimes we don't. So we make our best guess by the condition of their teeth. Sometimes we are fooled. We ask that if you are concerned about the age of the pet you adopt, you take the pet to your veterinarian for the vet's best educated guess.
Adoption fees are waived for pets eight years and older adopted by senior citizens 60 years and older with the Ark’s "Golden Years" program. The "Golden Years" dogs are included on the "dogs" pages, or click here for a special page listing all the "Golden Years" pets.

Large wire dog crates
Since we only have 3 conventional dog Kennels, 4 x 8 foot, we have to crate all other dogs that can't be left loose at night. We are crating the 2 pups that arrived recently, and we have plenty of outdoor pens for exercise during the day. but need crates to house the dogs overnight. We need the large size, wire ones, not the plastic airline type. They need to be dimensional to keep medium to large size dogs.
36"L x 22.5"W x 25"H or 42"L x 28"W X 30"H.
GYPSY is a 5 year old spayed Lab and Golden Retriever mix, weighing 75 pounds. She was rescued from North Carolina where she had she spent four plus years in a pen with an English Bull Terrier. She did have a shelter, but was not a house dog. Now, she really just wants to be indoors with her very own family. She bonded with my husband when he went to get her but we have been unsuccessful in our attempt to have her bond with our other dog and cat. Gypsy is very affectionate and intelligent, a calm and loving dog, Housebroken, and in need of some training, space to move and daily activity to keep her brain engaged, Gypsy needs a home with a calm assertive person where she is the only pet. She is up to date with all of her shots, but must take heartworm medicine as early signs of heartworm have been detected. We will foster her until we find the best permanent home for her. We would like to keep her but must respect the needs of our other pets. Contact Info: Jack and Myra Hornblower, Sullivan, Maine 207-422-8931; email: mainemyra@yahoo.com. HUCKABEE is a white and brown hound with one black spot, probably born around 2004. Picked up as a starving, skin-and-bones stray, he has had a complete checkup at the vet, along with extensive blood work, which has not yet been completed. In the meantime, Huck has been eating like a pig, gaining weight and muscle tone, now looking like a shiny-coated, healthy boy. He was obviously once a house pet. He's housebroken and friendly with all the people he meets. He enjoys car rides and walks well on lead, nose to the ground in typical hound fashion. A sweet boy who likes people, available for adoption once he's been neutered, Huckabee is a nice dog who needs a home with no cats. He can never be allowed to roam free–a fenced yard, a tie-out, or a walk always on lead are essential. Click on his photo for a larger view.
TITAN is a big boy, maybe Rottie mixed with hound, maybe not, but for sure, one of the friendliest dogs you'll ever meet. He gets along famously with other dogs, and he's as sweet as can be with everyone who visits. Always up for a new adventure, he likes to go for car rides. Walking on lead is a new experience–we're working on it–and housebreaking is getting better. He and his twin sister, Athena, came to us as strays, but it hasn't affected their enthusiastic personalities one bit. Titan and Athena love to play exciting puppy games, chasing each other all over our fenced yard. This is one very sweet boy, as is his sister Athena. Both of them are super friendly with everyone they meet. Click on his photo for a larger view.
FRANKIE is a male Pomeranian pup, born in January, 2010. A cute little blue-eyed, cream and orange fluff ball, Frankie is very playful. He gets along great with other dogs, too. With a sweet temperament and a gentle personality, he likes affection and loves to be cuddled. Frankie is our special needs boy, currently being fostered because we don't want him to be stressed at our busy shelter. The vet has found a heart murmur, which may not be serious, but he will be seen by a specialist to determine whether the problem is serious or not. Click on his photo for a larger view.
NAPOLEON is a neutered black Lab, an elder statesman of 10+ years, born in September of 1999. He's mostly a quiet dog, barking only to let you know when someone is coming, or howling for a short time when he gets lonely. He has no health problems and seems in great shape for his age. He was surrendered because he's too big and strong walking on lead, and needs a fenced yard if left alone outside. He likes to be with his person and not outside by himself. Walks and car rides are favorite activities, but his favorite pastime is lying on the couch cuddled up next to his person. He's probably not good with cats, and because of his size, he needs a home with no small children. The Ark will waive his adoption fee to an approved home and may help with certain age-related medical expenses. Click on his photo for a larger view.
